MGCY Migration receives an award for contribution to GFMD

MGCY was honoured with official recognition from the 13th GFMD Chair as key contributors to the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) process. This recognition follows three years of advocacy and coordination to facilitate the direct engagement of youth in the year-round preparations and Summit activities, along with self-organizing youth spaces throughout the entire GFMD process and beyond. The recognition was announced during the closing of this year’s Summit.

During the Closing Ceremony of the 13th GFMD Summit, the GFMD Chair – the United Arab Emirates through H.E. Nasser Bin Thani Al Hamli – honoured MGCY as key contributors to the GFMD process for its three years of engagement in the migration space and for creating a space for youth to participate at the GFMD.

In the past year alone, MGCY Migration consulted with 145 youth-led organizations, operating in 79 countries, representing 88,000 youth on key priorities on migration and development, including in relation to GFMD themes.

Near the end of 2020, 100 youth representing ~55 countries were selected from nearly 1000 applicants to participate in the 3rd Migration Youth Forum, where they worked to consolidate these priorities to present at the GFMD.

The GFMD Chair opened its doors for a record number of 96 youth delegates, 16 of whom were speakers or panelists on the official agendas of government roundtable discussions and side events, where they delivered concrete examples of youth-led solutions and key recommendations to stakeholders. Several other MGCY representatives seized the opportunity to take part in this global discussion by making interventions on the floor and in the chat throughout the virtual summit.
