Home » Global Compact on Migration
The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly & Regular Migration (GCM) was adopted in 2018, and is a non-binding agreement between Member States working towards a more conducive and positive environment for migration & human mobility. The global compact has 23 objectives for better managing migration at local, national, regional and global levels.
The GCM is at the heart of MYCP’s activities. As one of the two main spaces we engage in, MYCP co-ordinate youth activities and inputs in all GCM processes to ensure the voices of young people from around the world are heard, and taken seriously by decision makers.
Youth voices in international migration policy making is what we do, and as the youth constituency mandated to serve young migrants and youth-led organisations we have three core values in our approach to the GCM: inclusivity, unity & action.
Every 4 years, States regionally review their progress towards the 23 GCM objectives in the run up to the next International Migration Youth Forum (IMRF). The Regional Review process is coordinated by the UN Network on Migration and the UN Regional Economic Commissions.
MYCP and our regional teams are leading inclusive youth efforts through our Youth Policy Surveys, and the creation of Youth Policy Briefs, which will ultimately provide one key recommendation for a regional/global migration challenge to States.
We need your voices, and opinions to help us do our work. Take part in our Youth Policy Surveys to have your solutions and perspectives heard and taken seriously by decision-makers.

We mobilize young people’s participation in their national GCM reviews through promoting consultations in collaboration with local civil society, governments, and the UN.
Relevant projects
The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration is the culmination of over 18 months of intensive consultations and negotiations, involving governments and other actors including civil society and the private sector. It is the first-ever global agreement on a common approach to international migration in all its dimensions.
The Global Compact for Migration represents a historic opportunity to improve international cooperation on migration, and to strengthen the contribution of migrants and migration to sustainable development. Though it is not legally binding, the GCM outlines a cooperative framework for better managing migration at local, national, regional and global levels. It compiles principles, rights and obligations from existing international law instruments regarding migration, and identifies best practices in all areas of migration.
MYCP is part of the Major Group for Children and Youth (MGCY) – the official, formal and self-organised space for children and youth (aged below 30) to contribute to and engage in certain intergovernmental and allied policy processes at the UN since 1992. Our mission is to bridge children and youth and the UN system, with a focus on migration issues, in order to ensure that their right to meaningful participation is realised. We do so by engaging children and youth entities in formal and informal forms in the design, implementation, monitoring, follow-up and review of sustainable development policies at all levels in four areas: Policy & Advocacy, Capacity Building, Youth Action and Knowledge.
